Peter Standen was born in Carshalton, Surrey in 1936. He served a bookbinding apprenticeship before studying at Nottingham College of Art and Craft (1954 – 1956). He was subsequently awarded an Andrew Grant Open Bequest in 1956. He completed both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Edinburgh College of Art.
After two years of National Service (1960 – 1962) with the British Army of the Rhine, he travelled extensively in Spain, North Africa, East Africa, Sudan and the Middle East. Standen has taught in various schools, and in 1987 served as the Scottish Arts Council Artist-in-Industry with Ferranti Professional Components plc in Dundee. His work is represented in diverse collections, some of which include: Sautter-Fischbaker, Zurich; Hamilton Art Gallery, Ontario; Instituto Perla Cultura & L'Arte Catania; Scottish Arts Council; City Art Centre, Edinburgh; Leeds Education Department; International Club, London; Ferranti, Dalkeith and Dundee; the Royal Bank of Scotland; and Durham University. He has been a member of The Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop since 1972, and of the Society of Scottish Artists since 1965.
